The alternator is a key component to maintaining the electrical power levels in your vehicle.
An alternator is basically a small generator. It works by moving a magnetic field through a conductor, creating an electric field. By moving back and forth very quickly, the alternator will produce an alternating current that switches from positive to negative many times every second.
The power from the alternator is passed through a current rectifier (a diode) which changes the power from a alternating current to a direct current. One diode will send the positive current to the positive battery terminal, and another will send the negative current to the negative terminal.
Alternators run three internal coils, meaning at every moment at least one is creating positive current, and one is creating negative current, meaning the power is consistent enough to run all the cars electrics, and charge the battery.
