The object of the ignition system is to ignite the air/fuel mixture in the cylinders by creating a spark. Because of the pressure created in the combustion chamber when the piston reaches TDC (top dead centre) about 8000 volts is required to create the spark. This voltage is created by an ignition coil. The job of the HT Leads is to transfer this voltage from the ignition coil to each individual spark plug at the exact moment the piston is at TDC.
Ignition leads are generally found in older vehicles. Over time advances in technology have enabled manufacturers to replace the conventional ignition system with a much more reliable system.
