The Timing Belt (or Cam Belt) has the important task of keeping the timing of the engine at a constant pre-determined position. Basically this means that it controls when the pistons and valves move to their optimum working position within the block. It controls the opening and closing of the inlet and exhaust valves, and ensures the pistons reach the top of the combustion chamber at the perfect moment for the process of ignition to occur.
Some engines run a timing chain as opposed to a Timing belt; the job of the chain is exactly the same as a cam belt. The chain has its advantages, as service intervals for a timing chain tends to be around 120000 miles, where as a belt is on average around 80000 miles.
