Used predominantly by Citroen, suspension spheres are located at the top of the suspension strut. They contain a mixture of pressurised nitrogen gas and mineral hydraulic fluid that are separated by an internal membrane. When under pressure the nitrogen acts as a pneumatic spring, while the flow of the hydraulic fluid is controlled by valves to create the dampening.
This variant of suspension system is very limited in its application, mostly found on Citroen models such as the C5 and the Xantia. It does however create one of the smoothest ride quality's found on today's vehicles.
